So here is something new....
This week Abbie had a lot of questions about Martin Luther King, Civil Rights, Blacks vs. Whites... (she had been learning about it in school) It was so foreign to her that people were treated so badly for so long JUST because they were a different color. It was VERY interesting watching her mind go in circles on "how can this be" I do think it was cool that she thought this was "an the olden' days thing" And every time we would mention a different part of the Civil Right Movement....She became more and more interested in how this could all be. In the rally's in the walks, in what Martin Luther King did and the stand that Rosa Parks made.
She called my Dad and talked to him about his experiences and what he thought about it. And of course my dad had story upon stories for her. I think they spent about an hour on the phone talking.
So last night we watched The Help with her and although we paused alot the movie as we went through it, to explain why they were being treated that way. She was so sad!
She said. "It is a good thing people aren't treated like that anymore.... right?? they aren't treated like that anymore...?? "And we responded there are some people that still don't like people because of their skin color. AND SHE WAS SHOCKED!!!
So at the end of the movie she says. I am so thankful for Martin Luther King and what he did for our country.
And I think that is true.... it took YEARS....YEARS and YEARS....and sadly it still lingers.... But MLK... def made his mark and it was a great one!!
